vivienne says...

Joyce: Sounds good. Who else is up for it?

Joyce says...

howbout... Congee Noodle House at 4:00 pm [ or 3:30pm for people who are usually late, like me].

sounds good?

vivienne says...

what time is congee tomorrow? and are we doing anything at Li-kai's?

How was the clubbing and blackcomb yesterday? ^-^

Leaky Wang!!!! says...

Hey guys: I’m good for congee, but might not be able to make early lunch. I should be ok for it after 1pm. As for drinking, seems like there might not be enough interest in that so I won’t drink either. My place is still available for a gathering if there’s need. Joyce: I don’t recall you leaving a mahjong set you left…when did you bring it over? I’ll double check when I get back just in case.

vivienne says...

The congee thing sounds good. Seems like a nice, quiet way to end the holidays. LOL

Joyce says...

bah, i'm an idiot. i finally read through each one of ur posts after making mine.

leaky: u want to combine the congee/drinking? I'll pass on drinking though. My parents've been complaining that they hardly see me, and buzzed packing night probably won't help either.

Joyce says...

The First Group Function of The Year
a lot of us are leaving on the 2nd. after a long discussion with Gary, who, by the way, finally checks the blog for what's going on, we came up with the idea of going to the
congee noodle house on broadway and main.
Gary won't be able to make it in the evening, and some of us need to pack/sleep early for the trip back to some more endless academic torture, howbout An AFTERNOON CONGEE event for the P&C on January 1st, 2006??? [the venue's convenient for campus people, east/west sider, coq and bby bums... right?]

inputs/confirmation needed, reply asap.

leaky, i left my mahjong set in ur house. do u still have it?

Joanne says...

But you'll have to sit through hip hop music.

Joanne says...

For those brave souls...

I have the big GMC Astrovan tomorrow so that means I can give rides to and from clubbing. I am currently advertising 4 spots in the van. Don't worry - my driving has improved and with a car that big, I end up hurting other people rather than them hurting me. And I'm usually a defensive driver, so it'll just take us a long time to get to the club, haha. Best of all, I don't need alcohol to dance like an idiot so I'm the perfect candidate for the designated driver.

So just give me a shout.

Unknown says...

Im in!! As soon as I get over this flu that is =P.

Leaky Wang!!!! says...

Hey guys, how goes it? I’ll be returning to Vancouver on the morning of Jan 01st, and am wondering whether you guys have any plans for that night. If I remember correctly, that will be the last day before some of you have to go out of province/country. Therefore, if there’s enough interest, I can make my house available for hangout or whatnot for after dinner hours. Drinking and gambling is encouraged at the premises…and further accommodations can be made available…for an additional fee of….one MILLION dollars!! But seriously folks…post your responses as I’ll check the blog daily before I leave. If the after hours timing doesn’t work out, we can always make it an afternoon thing instead. Send me some feedbacks!

Leaky

Joanne says...

If it makes you feel any better Cindy, I never get invited to these MJ things as well *grumble*...

May all of you let me know if you'll be there at Plush and if any of you have a car? Getting to the club should be ok, but it's a matter of getting back home because buses stop running after 1:30ish am... And we can all go out for late night food afterwards so Cindy can see us all as a group :). Do they have really really late night sushi...

Drop me a message on MSN, on the blog, or text message me at 416-834-4918 (advertising my number online is not smart I know but what are the chances that someone else is reading this?). Thanks,

NeverGonnaGrowUp says...

wait! what ski thing? ahh i feel out of the loop, someone please fill me in! and MJs at Leo's (as I've heard today), can I be invited next time too?

as for the fallen plan for the 30th...no dinner?! that means i will not see the whole group again before joyce joanne gordon and chris leave again for the new term...aww...

Joanne says...

For those of you involved in the Blackcomb trip, you can get EDGE tickets at Sportchek for $69...meaning you save $5 on your lift ticket. I heard that you can get cheaper rentals through 7-11...not too sure about that but I will check tomorrow morning.

Joanne says...

So it turns out quite a few people already have other dinner plans or would prefer to eat at home on the 30th...plus there's a ski trip to WHISTLER (booyah!) earlier in the day so to avoid complete exhaustion, we're all just gonna meet at 10:30pm at Plush to go clubbing, is that ok? It's the biggest club in Vancouver (900 body legal capacity) and there was a Russell Simmons + entourage sighting. The address is 750 Pacific Blvd which is right in the Plaza of Nations and a stone's throw from Stadium Skytrain Station. Plenty of parking nearby. I don't know the same kind of people here as I do in Toronto so we'll all have to pay - $15 cover. They don't have a guest list for Fridays, meaning we'll have to get there before 11pm to avoid the REALLY bad lineup. For those of you with more of a sense of embarrassment, feel free to organize a pre-drinking fest to "loosen up" but don't expect anything from me because my family will want me home until then. (By the way, I heard Chris actually wanted to go clubbing? Did I hear right??????)

So Cindy, looks like you two can make the sushi noshing an intimate affair for two ;). If any of you are still wondering about the Imprentice show, the hilarious improv show is showing for $13 if you present your student card. You can usually buy your tickets at the door - no need to go through Ticketmaster and it's general seating.

I'm up for the 31st! If I have time, I'll bring you guys a homemade gingerbread crust cheesecake.

NeverGonnaGrowUp says...

how was the picasso outing guys? sorry that i missed it, overslept.

anyhow, about the dec 31 concert, is anybody coming at all? jenny and i need to know before dec 30, please. thanks.

NeverGonnaGrowUp says...

according to chris, the shabusen all-you-can-eat with hotpot is 30 bucks. and it's not very good.

chris and i both like the shabusen better if we do not include the hotpot. Chris wants to get some last minute sushi into his tummy before he leaves.

just out of interest sake, how much is the tix to the improv show?

otherwise love the plan! esp the dancing part...:D

Unknown says...

i won't be going dancing for sure, but I might head back to campus and do some drinking if anyone is up for it

Joanne says...

Plans for the 30th

What are you guys up for? Did we want to do something mellow or do we want to PARTY IT UP? I'm up for the latter, so I'll plan accordingly, muahahaha. If indeed mellowness is your preference, feel free to usurp this task that's been assigned to me (thanks Chris, lol). So how does the following sound?

5:30pm Dining at Sandbar or Shabusen (they have hot pot included in the all-you-can-eat now!)?

7:30pm Laughing at The Imprentice North Pole Edition

10:00pm Dancing at Plush

The quintessential Vancouver experience in one night if you ask me. Feel free to throw suggestions at me.

Joyce says...

I think I'll eat at home.

Let's meet at the VAG entrance at 1pm them.

and, enjoyr your quote of the week... tsak.. see how altruistic i am

Unknown says...

sure we could do that... Any ideas? Do we just wanna wonder around downtown and look for a joint? or eat somewhere else then head downtown?

Joanne says...

Why don't we tie in some lunch plans before meeting up at the VAG entrance...?

Monday, December 26, 2005

Unknown says...

alright alright...finally allocated some time to do some planning.

So on Wed the 28th, let's go after lunch... Say between 12:30 and 1:00 we'll leave and assemble at VAG entrance, then we have the entire afternoon (I can't remember if it closes at 4 or 5). Are people thinking of just taking the bus, or should I try to round up drivers?

vivienne says...

I like the new colour scheme. :D

Pat says...

Hey Merry christmas Guys! Hope things are well in Van. I will be reporting live from HK at http://ehion2.blogspot.com if you are interested in seeing my transformation into a conger.. CBC honger hybrid. meheh. Anyways.. oh and uhh.. happy boxing day?

Yeah the Picasso exhibit is amazing! Although give yourselves ample time to walk around.. there is a lot of stuff. The upstairs is a bit odd too... very abstract. Be prepared for randomness.

NeverGonnaGrowUp says...

Happy Holidays everybody!

Peter says...

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!

P.S. EXTRA $100 off any suit at Harry Rosen BEFORE NOON ON BOXING DAY - DO IT!!!

that is all.

Saturday, December 24, 2005

Joanne says...

To the Crazy Boxing Day Sales Boys:

Would it be feasible for us to visit NCIX? hehe.

Gordon says...

Merry Christmas Eve!

Thanks Ben for letting us trash your apartment!

Karen says...

- may your x'mas' be merry and magical -

ben: i'm in.

viv: sounds like SOMEONE wants to organize again!! =P btw, congratulations on a job very well done this past week. *thumbs up*

vivienne says...

HAHA..Joyce's quote should be a PERMANENT quote.

Picasso sounds good; are we also doing something on the 30th? Maybe we can combine the two?

vivienne says...

HEY GUYS....dinner will be at 6:30 instead of 7:00 as previously noted. Thanks!

Joyce says...

dear fellow biochem victims,
hang in there. you are almost there at the finish line, mutilating sadowski with your imagination in its greatest capacity.

good luck. be confident [even if it's just blind confidence]. and kick that exam's non-existential ass. *big hug*

Tuesday, December 20, 2005

Pat says...

omg.. i dont know if its the 4th cup of coffee or just because my brain is totally not functioning right now.. but the 410 discussion board is sooo funny. Not only is sadowski snarky to the students, there are these students who are blantly sarcastic and rude to other students.. hahaha.. oh sigh.. if only everyone had access to this.

Karen says...

- soooooo close!!! -

omg. one more. like pat said post-physiology today: MAKE IT STOP.

will allow myself one more 'unloading' hour before jumping right back into the pool. okay? okay.

Monday, December 19, 2005

Karen says...

- another one down!!! -

4 hours of sleep. 2.5 hours of exam writing. and a 5-hour nap later, i'm PUMPED!!

ready for another lotsa hours of studying!!! only 2 left!!! yay!!! =) =) =) i can SMELL the finish line.

Peter says...

hey pat, i think i might have called you during ur exam? sorry man, i totally forgot u were one of the biochem ppl. hope it didn't inconvenience u.

Joanne says...

Uhh, it's the 20th for Li-Kai's thing, sorry about the mixup peeps. When it doubt, the day overrules.

I've been inhaling methanol the whole day on 4 hours of sleep/night for the past week...please excuse me people.

Pat says...

I'm going to invent a device that creates a magnetic bubble that cuts off all cellphone reception in libraries.. omg.. not only do I hate people who talk on cellphones in the library.. I hate people who point and laugh at other people who are unfortunately not dressed as well or just happens to have a bag of pop cans (probably to pay for tuition) and whisper... seriously.. people disappoint me sometimes.

Gordon says...

Joanne, is likai's thing the 22nd? I thought it was on the 20th?

Sunday, December 18, 2005

vivienne says...

Oh, one final note: please be prepared to bring a few bucks to cover fondue/snacks, and BYOB, since I don't know everyone's tastes and also don't have enough money to cover for everyone. Thanks. ^-^

Joanne says...

JUST spoke to Li-Kai, so here are the plans for the 20th:

Why: Get together for a late lunch/indulgent snack before Li-Kai leaves for Taiwan (you gotta spend at least ONE Christmas in Vancouver, man!)

When: 2:30pm, Tuesday, December 22nd, 2005

Where: La Crepe Bretonne, 795 Jervis St (Jervis X Robson)

What: In my opinion, the best French crepes in the city. A mom and pop establishment run by a mom and pop who actually came from Bretagne (sp?) in France. So brush up on your French because they don't ask for your order in English... Everything from the savoury to the sweet and sublime. Try crepes with duck confit, a crepe flamed in Grand Marnier, a French onion soup, a hearty gratin, or just sip a cup of espresso. Your meal should be under $10...unless you eat 2 crepes...which I have a propensity for doing...

Who: Anyone who's not stressing over BIOC 402!!!!!

Joanne says...

Yar, I'm there for the 22nd!!! Regarding the sleepover, is this a drunken sleepover or just a sleepover? I'm building up quite a tolerance here - I need to upstage someone in drinking!!!

Li-Kai will be available for lunch/late lunch... I'm personally leaning towards a late lunch thing (since I already have lunch plans haha)...so inciting public riots might be a little obvious at that time...

vivienne says...

Haha...I just thought of the most obvious things we could do together: sing carols. As corny as it sounds, we had a blast with it before. Do any of you have any carol lyricbooks that you can bring?

Christopher says...

Woohoo! You can count me in for the 22nd! Thanks for organizing it Viv.

Anyhow, who is available for the Dec 20th event to celebrate Li-kai's departure? (He might even be there!)

Anyone up for dinner/bubble tea/pool/sitting on the street/drinking/karoake/inciting public riots that night?

Peter says...

hey viv, just wanted to let ya know i read ur post and i'll be there. thanks. pete.

p.s. biochem ppl: don't worry, the hurting will stop soon. and when it does, we shall drink. and it will be good.

NeverGonnaGrowUp says...

viv, awesome organization! don't apologize for anything, i'm sure you made a good choice and more importantly i'm sure we'll all have tonnes of fun :)

so is it still semi-formal or something for us to dress up to?

anyhow just giving you guys a big HEYA cuz i'm back in van too after an hour and a half delay, and after struggling to keep my misshapened lugguages from falling over as i'm speedwalking to my check-in.

my house is so cold! and i need to vacuum and organize everything. can't do anything about the cold but im looking forward to unpacking and making my house beautiful and neat again after having lived out of a suitcase for a good 3 months in total...FINALLY! HOME!

Karen says...

- *whimper* -

joyce: right you are. you know me well. hahahaha. no problem. *sigh* what's another two days to the 100+ that i haven't seen you? =P

viv: hehehe. i did put up a warning post WAY early so that changes could be made. remember the 'or forever hold your peace' part *ahem* gordon *cough*? =P so fondue it is! i offer a half-hearted apology for my part in that. it'll be great. *thumbs up viv* oh, and mike, i believe is leaving that day and christina i'm sure one of us will be able to notify her monday.

ben/pat: i know you're reading this even though you're not posting. do you guys feel like dying too? *sob* cheers to the last leg of the longest exam season EVER.

Saturday, December 17, 2005

Christopher says...

Heya guys!

I'm back in Vancouver!

And it's COLD! (Sadly enough I think Toronto was warmer than it is now)

Whats the game plan for the 20th and 22nd?

Keep up all the hard work on the exams.

Gordon says...

see vivenne...now that's what you get for listening to karen and ben...

I TOLD YOU THAT PLACE WAS EXPENSIVE!

Oh well, they do have cheap beer!!

Anywayz...it's gonna be a blast...

Thanks again viv!

vivienne says...

22nd BASH DETAILS!

I know you guys all check the blog, so here goes (if you're checking the blog, you know you're invited ;D)

Dinner at 7:00 PM SHARP, RUGBY CLUB @ address, directions here:

Um...apparently they serve pricey tapas and the portions aren't that big... Sorry guys, I didn't do enough researching beforehand, and I've never been there myself. BUT BUT BUT...to make up for it...Leo suggested doing fondue afterwards for fun. You guys up for it? (cheese/chocolate? should we get fruits, bread, etc?)

As for the sleepover thing, Ben has generously offered us use of his apartment at UBC, so if you wanna sleepover, bring your essential toiletries, PJs, sleeping bag, etc. Note: there are only 8 chairs and NO other furniture...so, be prepared. There are also apparently no TV or anything...but if anyone has any cool board games (a la Taboo, Risk, etc, etc) feel free to bring it! (Gary has also offered us use of his place at Gage...but apparently after the whole drinking fiasco...-_-;;)

Any questions, comments, other entertainment ideas? Post them up before the 21st, when some of us will be getting some snacks to last us through the night. Contact us if you wanna come along for a pre-party. ;)

Also, could someone invite Christina and Michael for me? I'm having a hard time reaching them.

Also, if you have read this notice, please reply on the blog to let me know that you know the details. THANK YOU, and MERRY MERRY CHRISTMAS, and GOOD LUCK to the biochem people! Add oil!

Joyce says...

karen: i'm sorry!!!! i checked my schedule.. and i have a dentist appt at 2:30... won't make it. :(

(i know you won't go on msn.. but will for sure check the blog.)

Joyce says...

I AM IN VANCOUVER

and

Pat says...

uhh.. double u, tee, eff ben?

.. man.. sometimes I wonder what would happen if they brought in guys dressed in white suits driving white vans with giant butterfly nets during exam period.

Karen says...

wow. okay ben, you win. *lol*

...AND...back to studying.

1st years eh? How about high schoolers, a la Gary. WOAHAHAHAHA (if you don't know what I'm talking about, you better ask Gary himself)...

Oh, I want.... to morph into a 30 feet tall transformer during the exam, shooting red hot laser out of one hand and green radioactive poisonous acidic goo out the other, plasma out of my eyes and lightning out of my ass, stomping down SRC and taking all the students with me, not to mention cutting (with my transformable right hand, which transformablllyly becomes a ginormous mid-2nd century Axe interestingly made out of a mineral that cannont be found on earth) the biochem profs into little pieces to feed the little transformer pigs that'll be popping out of my skull. All the while, laughing evily with ominous black cloud overcast and tornados touching down all over campus.

vivienne says...

Pat: I said *everyone* in this group has quirks. That includes me....I KNOW I'm quirky, I'm not gonna deny it. :p And yes, I can totally hear the sarcasm in the "hint hint" >___<

Pat says...

viv:

quriks huh?....
... people in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks.

... hint hint.

vivienne says...

Karen: Haha, very funny. I guess this is payback for third year, eh? Maybe I should take it up again....

Joanne: Nice theory, but unfortunately most of our guys live on campus, hence, no car :p Besides, if any of our guys came up to any random first year girl, I think they might be scared off. LOL....just because everyone in this group has some weird quirk or another....

Joanne says...

Man, you boys are making it too hard for yourselves. What you need to do is find some first year girls. Then find out which one doesn't have a car and has to take the bus everywhere. Then you casually drop that you have a car, and tada. You've become the older guy with a car, which is pretty much all an 18-year-old could dream of.

...oh wait.. no.. thats the sick feeling I have 'cause I realized my msn hiatus was prematurely shorten and I cannot retain any information that involves the word protein or neuron.

But.. yeah.. I just found out today that the best way to spend a birthday is to have a subway sandwich and bbt on kto... (which means that it just gets added to her tab and I'm actually paying for it)...

Heh. Hope exams are going well for everyone else.

ELECTIONS

I know many still have exams (me too, but i feel this is important). Please take a look at this when you have some free time.

Basically...

General stats and numbers about the upcoming election - very good overview of the election. worthy of note is the listings of "swing ridings". these are where differences can really be made, as candidates are neck and neck and WILL listen to the concerns of the people. MANY of these are in the Vancouver area. I'm deliberately posting some of the areas that I know you guys live in:

Format: [name of constituency and link to info, province, (winning party) % margin of difference]
Richmond, BC (Lib) 9.2%
Burnaby—New Westminster, BC (NDP) 0.8% BIG BATTLE HERE
Burnaby—Douglas, BC (NDP) 2.1%
Vancouver Kingsway, BC (Lib) 3.1%
Vancouver Centre, BC (Lib) 8.0%

Election Issues - great page that outlines some of the key issues at stake. Please know that this is ONLY a brief guide.

Main National Parties and their Websites - Go Here for Party Platforms (aka election promises):

Liberal Party of Canada (Liberals)

General Day to Day News - this stuff can get pretty annoying and tedious. warning: bullshit ahead.

CTV, CBC, Yahoo!, Google

Still not enough links? Here ya go.

Karen says...

- our last birthday of the year -

happy birthday pat. hopefully, it'll also be a happy exam day.

oh, i only see one mistake in the title. pat IS a co-funder! when you're nice to him (or have good blackmail material), he's a co-funder of various bubble tea and starbucks runs. =P

how do we see number of posts on the blog??

joyce: party planning for the 22nd, i believe our fabulous party planner will get around to finalizing details after she finishes her finals this week (15th?).

we won't have any birthdays for a long time...until february (becca's, but she doesn't read the blog), so it won't be til end of march for a real blog birthday.

edit: i personally like luciferase assays! it's just so cool, like GFP vectors. hehehe.

Monday, December 12, 2005

Peter says...

Happy Birthday, Pat.

Joanne says...

Where's the GSP? Our header requires some fixin'.

How does it feel to have the last birthday of the year, Pat?

And you guys think it's possible for us to hit the 3000 post mark before 2006?

Man, 2006...we're getting old...

Christopher says...

Felicitations Mr. Tam!

Good luck on all of your exams!

Perhaps Sadowski won't give us a #$^@#$ exam after that who knows...

Maybe she saved us all ***SALUTES***

Joyce says...

well.. i need to go in hiding for my tooth anatomy exam.
you guys go fight for the midnight post.

happy birthday Pat

ben: i'm in for the picasso. let's go.
karen: when seeing the "#2" title of your post, I thought you were joining that little club of us the toilet lovers.

EVERYONE: what's going to happen on 22nd?

Joanne says...

Indeed that's the enzyme you get from firefly butts! Advantages include its sensitivity, lack of endogenous activity in mammalian cells, linear over a magnitude of 8 orders, does not require radioactive substrates for detection, compatible with other reporter assays, and there exists assays for high-throughput screening. But they cloned the gene luc so you don't have to pluck it out of firefly butts - just clone your putative promoter and enhancer sequence upstream of the intron in the pGL3-Basic vector and watch your cells luminesce when you supply it with luciferin and ATP in the presence of oxygen.

BIOCD 410ers: don't completely gloss over my rambling (a sad attempt to channel my studying into other forms)...the luciferase assay showed up on our test last year...

I'm actually deliberately trying to piss off our blog admins...see how many of these kinda posts I can get away with before they start blocking me, haha. It's the scientific method yo.

vivienne says...

Bits and pieces...

Joyce: *pat pat pat* It'll all be over soon...

Karen: I think I memorized all that crap, but it didn't come up on the test. O.o;

Joanne: Firefly luciferase? I vaguely remember Sadowski or some other prof saying that you get it from firefly butts? Something about plucking all the butts off and getting the enzyme from them....

Joanne says...

I dunno about using it for learning purposes...remember all my infractions of the P&C bylaw? Speaking of which...

chloramphenicol acetyltransferase
beta-galactosidase
firefly luciferase
ecdysone VP16 transactivator
retinoid X receptor
farsenoid X receptor
ultraspiracle protein
tetracycline
glutocorticoid regulatory element

Take THAT!! Muahahahaha

I don't remember much about memorizing individual H-bonds, but he asked us about specific assays used in that paper we didn't really bother to read, and definitions...know your definitions.

Sunday, December 11, 2005

Karen says...

- nerding it up! -

joyce, chris, joanne, and viv: do you think we need to know specifically all the H-bonds of the secondary RNA structures for 410?? ie, the N7 of guanine H-bonds non-Watson/Crick style to 2'OH of something else in the tetraloop and etc.?? should i know it on an atom to atom basis? or base to base? or not at all?? did he examine in that detail last year? i really, really, really don't wanna memorize those. so SO painful. thank you ahead of time.

(we're allowed to use this blog for academic learning purposes right?? =P)

Joyce says...

joyce: i'm not suprised at all. in fact, even if ur T43 was still ON, fell OUT of its protective pouch, tumbled on the street, got run over by a car that leaked petrol onto it afterwards AND then set on fire, i still wouldn't be suprised if it survives. Next to those crazy panasonic toughbooks, IBMs are the most secure and durable consumer laptops on the planet. this is proven time and time again :p that's why i wish i had one :(

RE: Hockey

Hahha..Karen, you're totally right. I used to think the Sedins were rather strange looking before. Anyhow, D. Sedin really did a spectacular job in the shootout. Heheh...I was telling my mom that there's no way we would win in the shootout since Hasek's a better goalie (and I used to like the Buffalo Sabers JUST because of him, LOL) but guess what, our Auldy rocks just as much.

Can't say much for Cloutier, though :P

Unknown says...

with Cloutier out so many games, you gotta wonder... Are they using him as trade bait? There are a few teams out there who need some shake ups and would probably trade for Cloutier...

I say, Ship Cloutier and Jovo to Florida for Luongo and Bawmeester!!!

Joyce says...

On the way to school yesterday, my backpack was unzipped and my dear IBM T43 [in its pouch] fell out to the ground. well.. I had an anatomy final in 20 minutes, so I didn't really worry about it until later that day. While I was chillaxing with my friends in the student lounge, I realized what had happened to my dear laptop. In a panic, I took it out and opened it.
NOTHING....
Nothing happened to my dear IBM. mwahaha, it was pefectly fine with the anatomy texts still running just like the night before.

Last month, my friend's Sony VAIO fell off from ~ 20cm above the ground, and now it can't detect its own hard drive.

and who says IBM sucks???

Karen says...

- #2 -

oohhhhhhhhhhhhhh yes. oh yes. =P and actually the sedins aren't as bad looking as they used to be either!

Joanne says...

Not to mention Matthias Ohlund is quite good-lookin' ;).

Karen says...

- abstract thinking -

sounds like fun. i'm thinking that abstract art may be good for us. helps prepare us to think in abstract ways to swallow the numbers that will be presented before us on ssc during the holidays.

ARGH. don't. wanna. study.

PS: with cloutier gone for sooo many games, the sedins (and ohlund) are quick becoming my new favorite canucks! did you guys SEE that daniel sedin goal tonight?!

Anyone wanna go after exams?

Thursday, December 08, 2005

Joanne says...

OOOooooOOOOOooooHHHHhhhh POLYTRON!!!

It's true, you can stuff anything under it and it's mush in a matter of seconds. There's one right beside my bench but everyone is always like "Just use a detergent! You can't release the proteases!!!" No fair, the 4th year student who usurped my bench gets to have fun with it... Yes, I'm so unimportant that they told the 4th year student to use my bench. To protest I like to just stand there, stare at my buffers with a confused look on my face, and grumble to myself. That way, he can't access my bench to prepare his 120 scintillation vials.

I'm mean, I know. But if he TRIED to make conversation with me I might be a little nicer...

Chris: It involves falling asleep at 11pm, waking up (on my own without an alarm clock mind you) at 5am, and strangely, getting a call from Gordon 1 hour later... I think the technical term for this is "messed up."

As far as I'm concerned, whoever ends up in the Federal government makes no difference anyway. The provincial governments have too much power and not enough accountability. The federal government can cough up as much money as the citizens demand for health care, but in the end, if the provincial government wants to put that money into building a zoo inside a hospital, no one is going to stop them...

Karen says...

- polytrons -

hhahahahaahahahahahahahha. i get grossed out every time i read that part in barton's notes about how a mouse can be turned into soup in just THIRTY SECONDS in the polytron. *shudder* yeah, in case anybody else needed to know that.

edit: oh wait, NOT the mouse hair. THAT needs special treatment.

edit2: on re-reading my own post, i apologize for the above. it's kinda disgusting. it's this uncontrollable residual brain exhaust. i'm done. i promise. =)

Unknown says...

numbre of times I redid the practice exam: 4
number of questions I feel confident about: 0
Price of a Polytron: free if you steal it from bioc
thought of polytron-ing Barton: priceless...

Hey guys, apparently they found a dumbass gene...

i think i might have the dumb allel to this one lol

Karen says...

- my day in numbers -

number of hours slept: 4 (i think for the first time in my life i'm experiencing insomnia...omg, i'm getting old.)
number of cups of instant coffee before 404: 2
number of skittles right before 404: all the ones in the pack except for the greens and one red (which, ben was the sole beneficiary)
number of times i centrifuged something in the exam: 300 thousand BILLION
number of dollars i spent @ hallmark today: 36!! (is it me or are x'mas cards getting more expensive...)
number of disney princess cups i bought today: 2 (they're sooo cute!! for my boss' daughters...i SWEAR!! =P)
number of hours i'll waste tonight before studying again: 4, hopefully 3.

chris: too bad i didn't read your post before going to the exam...oh well...it went not bad (i don't wanna say well). *knock-on-wood* psychic forecast: that was the best exam we'll write this year.

joanne: nicole won. the girl with the porcelain doll face and long wavy reddish brown hair. you missed a good show!

elections: as much as minority governments keep the ruling party on their toes, i hate how we're running to the voting booths every year. bets are on another minority government. great.

Unknown says...

ONE DOWN!!!!
TIME TO START LAUGHING HYSTERICALLY AND SOBBING AT THE SAME TIME!!!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH410!!!!!!!!!

Election issues? that's a good idea.

JOIN FRAPPR.COM

Peter says...

note to the admins: if you guys ever have some spare time, could you maybe put some election issues/links in the news section... it'd be really cool if we could get everyone on this blog not only to vote, but to make an educated decision on january 23rd.

granted, politics are never fun... and you could make all sorts of arguements that our votes are useless due to the first past the post system etc etc. but voter participation for our age group was just sad during the last election. and besides, if you vote, you'll have the absolute right to diss politicians all you'd like in the next (hopefully) four years.

Christopher says...

Man Joanne how are you writing messages at 5 something in the morn'. Thats crazy!

Anyhow for Bioc 404. I like Barton and he is one of my favorite profs. He does say that if you have another way that works you can write it down, However, in my experience things that have should have worked have not been awarded marks. Even though I was performining alot of those procedures in my Honours lab. A word of advice would be to answer the question using course material not what you do in your Honours lab. Not terribly satisfying eh?

Good luck guys!

Joanne says...

OMG, I completely forgot about that! I was out shopping... Every party I'm attending requires a toy for charity to enter. Consequently, I spent close to $50 on toys for underpriviledged children. Social acceptance now comes with social responsibility. It's a good idea, but man, it's burning a hole in my wallet.

Who won???? I was so sad when Kim got kicked out...I was totally rooting for the androgynous (sp?) lesbian.

oh just you wait ben, wait til you have him in 421. barton's even better in the lab. eugh! thank god biochem labs are OVER. amen!

i just finished watching the season finale of america's next top model!! hahaahhaa. it's such a good show. (do any of the girls watch it?? =P) i'm all giddy just having watched it. =P hehehe. yay, we'll be one final down by tomorrow!! =)

Unknown says...

I love how Barton glosses over questions he can't answer and just leave us hanging.

In class...

Barton: So that's how you do it...
Student: But what about this? Wouldn't this affect this?
Barton: .....
......
.........
***mumble mumble mumble***
Student: ...
Barton: ...
Student: ...
Barton: ***thinking***
Student: ...
Barton: moving on! Sinec we have no time!

END SKIT

Any 404 survivors know if he'll take answers that ARE right, but AREN'T HIS?

Joanne says...

I spoke to Li-Kai briefly last night before he went drinking (people in Vancouver are drinking on a night that I'm not...I don't think this has happened while I'm in Toronto yet!) and he's totally up for something. His exam ends at 12pm. Plans to be finalized later. I say we make it involve BC wine somehow. Stupid Ontario VQA stuff...

Christopher says...

Lol what has Barton done?

By the way are we doing anything on the 20th to celebrate Li Kai's successful exam completion?

Joyce says...

I suddenly realized that around this time of the year is when most of the biochem majors realize what people say about "you learn to hate biochem in 4th year" is really true.

hahahahahahahaha

*sobbing*

i'll get back to anatomy now

Unknown says...

Did I ever mention Barton sucks? Like.... really really sucks!?

Karen says...

- a la joyce -

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

it's 3:19 pm and i've done NO studying today. i HATE RNA structures. HATE. !@#$.

Joanne says...

The postdoctoral fellow in my lab got engaged! So ladies: there's still hope for you after 40.

So I was shrieking when I found out. The number of people who knew about the engagement went from 2 to 20 in a matter of 3 seconds. So for future reference: for those of you with secret engagements, it would be in your interest not to tell Joanne the high decibel broadcaster.

It's funny. The guys in the lab started discussing wedding logistics with her and got all financial about it and everything - leave it to men to take the celebratory mood out of it all. But the even funnier thing is, they were so into planning the wedding!!! The girls were busy pouring our gels etc. but these guys just kept hashing it out. So the lesson is: guys are never as blasé about a wedding as they insist they are.

An Italian Jew marrying a Chinese person. Mmmmm..imagine the food...

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH

maxing out insanity...

Joanne says...

How about words like 3lit3 and sux0r?

Stephen says...

Most ridiculous thing I've ever seen: DKNY nylon puffy coat with Spanish rabbit fur trim for $1150. What is wrong with you that you need to spend over $1000 on a puffy coat? Especially when there are seven other styles of puffy coats for $400 and under.

Some clarifications: the word "alright" does not exist. It is "all right", two words, not one. Also, to have graduated from Gary's Perversity would mean that Gary is a deeply thoughtful and profound person. I suggest using a hyphen, i.e.: Perv-ersity, to highlight the word "perversion". I'm not even going to bother pointing out all of the "cuz"'s, "ur"'s, and other bastardizations and shortcuts to English that keyboards allow us. Let is just go on record that I hate them... and emoticons.

The only exception being w00t!

Hey peeps, I found this cool thing on the web when I should have been studying...
Join it!

1) become a member of www.frappr.com
2) look up the group called "UBC survivors"
3) join that group ---> you should be able to see me already on the map
4) tell your friends!!!

Ben (AHHHHHHHHHH back to 410)

Karen says...

- a love-hate relationship -

re: discussing this group's collective "problem" for the 100 billionth time. acknowledgement is acceptance?!

hahahahaahaha. sometimes this blog makes you laugh, sometimes it makes you cry, sometimes it makes you cringe and wanna go back to studying biochemistry. joanne, let's NOT imagine...yikes! *lol* so can we vote gary wong as the most influential person of this group, or at the very least give him a nomination? hahahaha.

yay biochem. 1 day of studying down. 17 left...someone, anyone, please shoot me.

Joanne says...

I think having our minds in the gutter is not a sign of sexual frustration. In fact, as Gordon and I both noticed, people who get sex on a regular basis talk about sex just as much...if not more.

Which brings up an even scarier thought: imagine our group conversations when we're no longer a bunch of virgins...

Saturday, December 03, 2005

vivienne says...

Pat: Hahah....nice to point out our group's main problem. However, I would like to remind you that some of us didn't have our minds in the gutter prior to meeting Gary, so definitely if you want the main instigator...well, there he is. :p but yes, at this point, we're all catalysts to each other...

Karen: The only "beaming" look I can see on Sadowski's face is one where he's looking over your term papers, and that's with a sadistic smile, mind you.

Pat says...

omg.. thats not funny.
that actually makes me sick.

... (insert that emoticon with the green face)

Karen says...

- funniest thing i've heard today -

ppl in 410: ann was telling me today that someone at the end of friday's lecture had gone up to sadowski to wish him merry x'mas and gave him a x'mas present!! hahahahahha. oh god, sadowski?! of all people!! makes you wonder: was she at the far left side or far right side of that curve he drew for us from the midterm mark distribution...? and apparently, he was BEAMING with joy. hahahaha. had to share.

okay, okay, i will start studying...@ 6!

Pat says...

now now.. don't try to slap this all on gary.. you and i both know that you, like most everyone in this group is just as sexually frustrated and helped to catalyze the 'new' joyce

vivienne says...

Joyce: Hahahah...don't worry, I probably would've responded with an loud immediate giggle if I were in your shoes. Anyhow, this proves that you have successfully graduated from Gary's Perversity 101 class. Congratulations.

Friday, December 02, 2005

Joyce says...

just something happened during lecture today...
It was our usual Friday 8 a.m. two hour cell bio lecture with some basic cell biology and genetics and the prof making not-so-funny jokes. After speeding through the cell cycle, CDKs, fundamental laws of genetics, we got to the Punnet square....
Prof: sorry ladies, but the guy's always on top
joyce: *immediate giggle*
Prof: *look at the non-responding class*.... slow class
joyce's friend: joyce, you are too quick...

who should I blame for this? :P

NeverGonnaGrowUp says...

Joanne: OH YA! Name a time and place to meet and I'll be there. (or you can call Chris to let me know. lol.) THANKS! Looking forward to clubbing!

Joanne says...

I'll bring the feathers!!!

Cindy: Chances are I'll be going clubbing on Saturday night...you interested???

Thursday, December 01, 2005

vivienne says...

Pete: I'm totally in favor of your suggestion. :p In addition to his immediate suspension from P&C, I also suggest that we tar and feather him >.<;;;

Peter says...

i'd like to table a motion to delete tim's post and suspend his posting privileges for the remainder of the exam season. admins?

Tim says...

I just thought I'd rub in this point:

I'm ALL DONE!! YIPPPEEE!!!!!

Alternatice penalty, the that suggested by ex-admin Peter Li, for blog member Timothy Leung:

Please write a 1000 word essay, in 12 pt font, double space, saved in a word document and uploaded to your own webspate. Then post a link to the essay for other members to read at their own discretion.

Essay should pinpoint:
why showing off one's freedom is inhumane
what should one do to prevent such disgrace to humanity
how Joyce Kao is the best blog admin ever

I'm never giving up my tea....NEVER! HERESY!!!!

NeverGonnaGrowUp says...

Greetings from a very warm Toronto (in comparison to Vancouver. The icy humidity really gets to you)...

Alright I admit, I haven't really walked outside all that much cuz I'm in major jet lag (I sleep at 3am Vancouver time. And this morning I woke up at 6am Toronto time, which would have been when I usually would have slept). But so far it feels so much better than Vancouver!

After attending medical school lecture in biochemistry and physiology this morning, I came home and just crashed on the sofa for like, 3 hours. Papie is still in school lol so I'm home alone and free to snoop! MUHAHAHAHA!

JOANNE: I waved good night to you last night from across the window even though you didn't see it. lol. as for papie drinking coffee like water - haven't seen it yet, but that's probably what is inside his huge mysterious aluminum thermal cups...
