I will be in vancouver for the entire July (at least tentatively), and then in Taiwan for early/mid auguest. Depending on the ticket price, I will either stop by Vancouver for few days before heading to NY or leaving for NY from Taiwan.

to the current/future, permanent/temporary TO-dwellers (chris/joanne/gordon): i now have confirmed dates! okay, so i'm gonna be there may 11th to 18th. unfortunately, it looks like my schedule is kinda cramped. i will be exploring unknown french lands monday (15th) onwards and i think my aunt/uncle/cousin have stuff planned for us for the weekend. i just really need to find out how far away they live from downtown TO and how easy it is for me to get around. and then we can match up our respective schedules! you guys will hear from me after exams, once i get organized and get stuff sorted out. =P looking forward to seeing you guys east of the rockies!

PS: yay two P&C summer trips!

Joyce says...

*cough*
Joyce has her last exam on June 29th

Gordon says...

heh..i feel like this has turned into my msg board...

Steve: Haha..Traitor? Screw the Habs! jk..I have nothing against the habs. Staal is just my favorite player. Hell, i'd cheer for the Aves if Staal was on that team! Although Mon did play awesome today...too bad they lost =P. And if I really had to choose, i'd want one of the AB teams to win the cup (even calgary despite kicking our asses 2 yrs ago). Maybe it's the alberta pride that is rubbing off on me...

Chris: Yeah, everyone is in vancouver at different times, so I am not sure how we'd be able to arrange something for everyone. So... I guess we'd just have to have two memorable trips this summer!

I'm going to be in Toronto from May 14-August 9th (with an interlude in late june/early july for my friend's wedding in Sask). I think Karen is there from May 10th-18th? I don't know what her plans are though. She said she might be outside of Toronto for some part of it (but i'm sure she's reading this and can explain herself =P). But yeah, we should definitely go for dinner one day if you feel like procrastinating from studying and hitting up a restaurant somewhere downtown. Maybe for Jo's bday, unless she goes to Eddie's house for dinner? Since it's also mother's day that day and we're all motherless in TO, we might as well celebrate the day together!

Christopher says...

Hrm. I'm really only available in really late June/July.

Cindy and I get back from Europe on the 27th, but both of us will be leaving Vancouver near the end of July. My August unfortunately is taken up by an observership in Windsor. I've also heard rumblings that Joyce is going to Taiwan in August, but she'll be back in Vancouver for July*.

Also when are you (Gordon) and Karen going to Toronto anyhow? We should definitely try to arrange something, although, my exams start in mid May.

*Edited: Originally I had it as May.

Stephen says...

CAROLINA!?

Gordon, you traitorous bastard! How dare you root for such a bullshit team! If any city does not deserve a hockey team, it's Raleigh. They weren't even sold out for game two, and they had goddamn cheerleaders! Hockey is not about cheerleaders! It's about beer-bellies, missing teeth, and the right to pull somebody's shirt over their head and punch the shit out of them!

Carolina.....

GO HABS!

Gordon says...

Hey Chris, there has been talks about a trip sometime in August (or I've talked to a few people about it) because everyone is going to be in vancouver at different times. I am not sure if anyone is planning anything for July, but I am going to try to get something for August in Tofino (or something that I can book easily). So hopefully you can make that! When do you start school?

Christopher says...

Hahaha, nah you didn't kill the blog. We are all just sleeping/studying and such I'm sure.

Gordon: Bastid, why are you complaining about finishing in a week lol. I'm not done till the end of the month. Yeah I'll completely agree with that, the lobby day is pretty worthless in terms of actual effect. Its more of something to train future lobbyists which it does a reasonable job of doing. Alot of my friends felt they had been thrown to the wolves. A 30 min info session does a trained negotiator not make.

All:

So congratulations to everyone who is graduating! Summer is swiftly approaching and this maybe one of the last times we will all be together. I was wondering if someone was going to plan a trip or something for July. Cindy and I will be gone for almost all of June, and I don't finish exams until the last day of May lol, so its going to be difficult for me to plan anything. Someone take charge and make this summer memorable!

Gordon says...

Whoops...I think I killed the blog...

Soooo...what are all your plans after your exams this friday while i'm stuck in school for another week?

Tuesday, April 25, 2006

Gordon says...

I guess I should've been more specific. Lobby DAY is ineffective and I agree that if you are part of an association, lobbying itself and petitions will be effective after a lot of time but not in a lobby-day-type setting because the government knows the issues and probably knows what will be brought up and would probably have prepared a defense against it. Also, the fact that you are lobbying in small groups makes the med students look like the lone soldier against a huge powerhouse since I am definitely not as swift of a speaker and quick on my feet to debate against a politician, since they probably battle the same issues daily (especially in Alberta since the third way have been the prime topic for ages now, although luckily that debate is over for now).

Haha...I am a cynic, but I do agree that things change with pressure and the presure from lobby days is just not great enough to make a large impact. PARA has probably worked for the longest time and researched hard so they could put the government in a corner in order to get the calls for residents to decrease and their annual salary to increase. And it took many many many hours and a lot of man power and public pressure (not only physicians and physicians alike) to get the government to stop pushing the third way (also probably because Klein is about to step down).

Yeah, and the IMG's are freaking me out...and so is the broader job description of NPs (or their potential duties in the future). But I don't know...maybe Canadians will still be favored in the CaRMS match.

Either way Chris, I'm glad you found lobbying a great experience and I really do hope that lobby days can change things. Maybe your event was more useful than the one I attended as I'm sure there is differences between the way Ontario ran it's lobby day vs. Alberta. I'm just too cynical to believe my lobbying in a small group environment and not having the expertise to handle the shots by politicians will make a huge difference in our medical education. All in all, politicians change things when it's election time and after hours and hours of pressure from associations, and that is when lobbying works because it just adds to the pressure.

Anyway, back to the game.... Detroit caught up in the final minutes...haha... GO OILERS!

Karen says...

chris, you can't call yourself a cynic after posting something like that! that was so hopeful and motivational and pro-'making a difference'! i swear toronto has changed you. good food for thought though. i liked it.

Christopher says...

Hahha all so cynical and at such a young age. Well thats OK, I'm cynical too.

So why am I hyped about lobbying? As an individual it is a waste of time to try to lobby. However, as an organization, such as your local medical association, these politicians have to listen. Doctors are one of the most trusted professions out there, and they have tremendous influence on the people they treat and meet. Our associations manipulate public opinions about health via the messages they put out on TV and in other media outlets.

People listen when doctors talk, and news mediums know that. It is very easy to get air time as a physician and you can get your message across (after fighting manipulative reporters). That my friends is power, and with power comes fear, which begets more power.

Gordon, if you don't feel that lobbying has accomplished anything, ask your medical association about their thoughts. Residents used to have call (24 hour shifts) 1 in 2 days. Now, its 1 in 4 or even less. Residents are now paid extra for every night of call they do. Residents now have maternity leave. These things affect you.

Healthcare costs our government over half their budgets. Politicians are desperate to find ways to save money. Yet, why are physician's wages still increasing, even when other professionals are suffering huge cutbacks and job losses. Thats because of the power that we have. Due to recent efforts, family physicians will see their pay almost double in Ontario. Just take a look at the difficulties nurses face in their negotiations, and their contribution to the delivery of healthcare is enormous.

However, even with this good news there are gloomy clouds on the horizon. You are at the centre of one of the largest changes to Canadian healthcare. Alberta's Third Way scares the pants off me and you have the opportunity to combat it. Through the efforts of many concerned groups, including many physicians, Alberta has backed off from many of the horrific idiotic goals in the plan (esp. allowing doctors to work in both public and private systems). That my friends is success and thank your colleagues who have worked hard on that for me.

Another scary issue that you should be concerned about is allowing International Medical Graduates to participate in the first iteration of the CARMS match. For the first time, last years match allowed IMGs to compete against Canadian medical students in the second iteration. I don't know how confident you are, but I question my ability to compete against a fully trained doctor with 20 years of actual experience. Wouldn't it be rosy to come out after paying tuition for four years (plus other expenses) to come out and find that your degree is useless? Fight it!

See my friends. Lobbying does work. Not because politicians care about people or whats right. It is because they have one goal in mind, getting elected again. You challenge that, and they will have to listen.

Gordon says...

ONE DOWN...haha...finally able to say something's down...

7 to go!!!

hahaha, yeah steve, i've watched more hockey now that van is out. i'm cheering for four teams too! Carolina, Flames, Oilers, Ottawa....too bad Carolina is sucking right now....

Stephen says...

This weather is awesome!!!

Also, with the Canucks out of the playoffs, I'm now cheering for four teams concurrently. Who would have thought that with the Canucks losing, I would actually watch more hockey than I have all year?

Go Habs, Sens, Flames, and Oilers!

Unknown says...

You guys know about the Grewal incident?
Well if you are out of BC, this might be news... or not
RCMP is investigating thousands of dollars in the form of cheques given to Grewal...
mmmm hmmm.... bottom line... federal politics is stinking with corruption nowadays =P

Gordon says...

Yeah, I"m with Jo on this one... we had that lobbying thing all week too, and it just seems rather pointless since the same points seem to be brought up over and over again. I am so sick of hearing about the third way here in Alberta and the gazillion of things that med students complain about (seems like that's all people have been doing all year...especially since it's the accreditation year).

It definitely didn't make me like the politicians more... they have to sound sincere and caring and all that jazz or they won't be enjoying those huge free dinner/lunches/condos/cars for any much longer. But it just seems like whatever we say gets heard, but not acknowledged.

Survival of the fakest!

Joanne says...

Man, this has probably got to be the most extended exam season ever - BIOC never ends this late! I commend you guys for sticking it out like this. Or maybe it feels long just because I'm sitting here with NO exams and I got bored of laughing at you guys while slacking at the lab computer 8P. Nevertheless, GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!
Ah Chris, this reminds me of the conversations I have with Abigale, the newest grad student in my lab. Her dad is an MPP representing...Muskoka I think, and it's just insane how much we can butt heads over political issues! Her desk is right beside mine in the Grad room and we're always debating in our little corner - she's an idealist and I'm more of a cynic. Plus I vote NDP and her dad is a member of the Conservative party, haha. The fact that these politicians can spin things so well is partly why I insist that lobbying is rarely effective (it works every once in a while, but with a very low success rate) and of course she has to stand up for the political process. Then we start arguing about whether or not the government would care to consider investing in the environment as a strategy to promote the health of its citizens (she thinks enough lobbying by a bunch of overqualified individuals ie. PhDs would get the government to consider it, I think the benefit of such investments is not perceivable soon enough to get the party brownie points come election time so the government won't ever bother).

Anyhow, nice benefits indeed! Her dad has a nice large condo up in Yorkville (which she gets to live in, arg) and a cottage up in Muskoka (which she gets to vacation in every weekend, arg).

On another note, it looks like we'll be paying less GST now eh?

Joyce says...

scroll bar?? what scroll bar? I don't see it on my firefox.

*opens IE*
*gasp*
*scramble through codes of the blog*

Alright. It is fixed.
Before, scroll bar will appear to accomodate long elements like a link, but I find scroll bars ... ugly, and it sometimes goes nuts in IE.
Now, it is set that, whenever you have a very long/big element (usually image or link), it will disappear beyond the border of the post area. If you see part of ur post is gone, it means u need to edit the post.

alright. done with renal/GI histo/physio. next, facial developement. expect more "ahh" next monday and thursday.

lalalala

good luck on exams everyone!
(and i wonder what the blog will be like once everyone's exam free.)

hang in there non-vancouverites. *two thumbs up* =P

actually, we're not really done here yet either. we just pretend like we are and not study for exams coming up this friday. i'll save my ahhs for thursday.

i love how our post-fest-age has induced the existence of the scrolly bar. fellow BIOC-ers: we're rounding the home stretch!!! =) =) =) but also kinda sad...=( =( =( a part of me doesn't want the final exam season to end...

Chris: Haha...I love that politician's quote. Horseshit, yes. Bwahahaha...

Speaking of quotes...this is the best "hope you do well on your test" encouragement from a friend of mine...goes like this:

"Wanted to wish you good luck with that exam. You're going to crush it like the empty tissue box that it is."

I don't think anyone has ever said that to me...LOL

Christopher says...

Mr. Ng goes to Queens Park

Just came back from Medical Student Day at Queens Park (Ontario's Provincial Parliament). It was an amazing event sponsored by our medical association and involved a handful of students from all of the medical schools. We did some leadership workshops and lobbying exercises on Sunday, but the real treat came today.

Today we went to parliament to lobby a Member of Provincial Parliament about student issues, such as tuition and debt repayment. The MPP that I lobbied was sort of rude and crazy antagonistic lol. I learned the hard way that politicians are damn good winning arguments lol. They can spin/challenge/destroy you and your facts in so many ways its dazzling. At the same time I had some fun and I feel that I was able to impart some of my concerns.

Afterwards we got to listen to the Minister of Health and Long Term Care and the two opposition health critics and ask them questions. It was hilarious how brutally honest the Minister was, involving comments like:

"I know this is horseshit. You know this is horseshit. Why are we talking about it?"
Brilliant! Haha thats not a side of politicians you see that often. At the same time I could see how they were skirting around many of the issues and were speaking in generalities alot.

At the end of the day we had a reception with all the MPP's and I had the best free meal I've ever had. They had an open bar with amazing wine, sushi platters (they still sucked compared to Vancouver), expensive cheeses, and waiters walking around with trays full of wine and hors d'oeuvres. There I got to listen to some of the different caucus members and got to share some of my crackpot theories.

I should note that I feel that politicians get a bad rap sometimes and they are often not as slimy as we think they are. Some of the politicians (mostly NDP) were very inspiring and sounded very honest and caring. I also respect the skills they have. After having argued with one, and listened to the witty banter in the house, I realize I don't have the skills to be a politician. Lol I also realized that they get a ton of nice benefits. I'd like a free fancy dinner like this every day.

Leaky Wang!!!! says...

OK, I got really bored reading about some literature stuff that anyone outside of the field woulnd't give a rats ass about....and then I came across this one some random forum. Enjoy.

Dear Technical Support,

18 months ago, I upgraded to Girlfriend 1.0 from DrinkingMates 4.2, which I had used for years without any trouble.
However, there are apparently conflicts between these two products and the only solution was to try and run Girlfriend 1.0 with the sound turned off.

To make matters worse, Girlfriend 1.0 is incompatible with several other applications, such as LadsNightOut 3.1, Football 4.5, and Playboy 6.9. Successive versions of GirlFriend proved no better.

I tried a shareware program, Slapper 2.1, but it had many bugs and left a virus in my system, forcing me to shut down completely for several weeks. Eventually, I tried to run GirlFriend 1.2 and Girlfriend 1.0 at the same time, only to discover that when these two systems detected each other they caused severe damage to my hardware.

I eventually upgraded to Fiancée 1.0, only to discover that this product soon had to be upgraded further to Wife 1.0. While Wife 1.0 tends to use up all my available resources, it does come bundled with FreeSe xPlus and Cleanhouse2005.

Shortly after this upgrade, however, I found that Wife 1.0 could be very unstable and costly to run. Any mistakes I made were automatically stored in Wife 1.0's memory and could not be deleted.
They then resurfaced months later when I had forgotten about them. Wife 1.0 also has an automatic Diary, Explorer and E-mail filter, and can, without warning, launch TurboStrop and Multi-Whinge.
These latter products have no Help files, and I have to try to guess what the problem is.

Additional problems are that Wife 1.0 needs updating regularly, requiring ShoeShop Browser for new attachments and Hairstyle Express which needs to be reinstalled every other week. Also, when Wife 1.0 attaches itself to my Saab 93 Convertible hard drive, it often crashes.

Wife 1.0 also comes with an irritating pop-up called MotherInLaw, which can't be turned off.

Recently I've been tempted to install Mistress 2003, but there could be problems. A friend of mine has alerted me to the fact that if Wife 1.0 detects Mistress 2003, it tends to delete all of your Money before uninstalling itself.

Help requested please

VANCOUVER P&C GIRLS UPDATE

Okay..haha...well, technically that's only me and Karen and Cindy, but whatever.

Cindy's planning to host a sleepover party at her place after the BPP formal on the 28th, so....girls are you interested? Karen, you can invite Ann too and Christina, as I don't have their contacts.

Post back if you're coming.

Also....I heard from Li-kai that we're doing something after the dinner at Ben's place? ....

Karen says...

hmmm not fun enough to go again huh?? omg. people actually do fall out?? my best friend went before and SHE fell out too!! her arm was bleeding and it was ALLLL bruised for like weeks!! but they picked her back up and didn't just leave her there.

Tim says...

Riverrafting was fun, although I suppose Leo and I were SLIGHTLY disappointed just because we had crazy expectations. We got to dunk in the river when it wasn't too fast, and we also got to do a hike to a waterfall where we got to go underneath it for like a minute (It was like super cold water...think putting your shower to the coldest...and worse). It was also kinda funny 'cause someone in my boat fell out at the entrance to the fast rapids at the end of the river and yeah, we weren't able to rescue her....but luckily another boat picked her up as she floated away. All in all a fun day out (including the road trip) but I probably wouldn't go again.

Karen says...

tim/leo: how was riverrafting?! can you pick NON-EXAM times next time so i can come with?!?! =P

Tim says...

SCA is caused by hemolysis of the blood due to sickling, it is not a very good shape for going through capillaries and it is probably removed by extravascular hemolysis for all I know.

Karen says...

Unknown says...

hey guys, how do we order grad gowns?

Gordon says...

Didn't that actually happen in one round Pat? When Leo "gonged" or something?

hey, that's not a geeky discussion. You are going to have a physiology exam! and sex and orgasms are allll about physiology.

G'luck on your final FINALS of undergrad EVER.

Pat says...

.... I'm so ashamed of everyone. Only this group could turn an orgasm and sex into a geeky discussion. This is really one for the books.

On another note.. I had another MJ dream again... Leo took my 9 circles and broke my all-star hand... aaaaaaaaa.... I wonder if thats foreshadowing.

Physiology = leo; no eat = fail!

Gordon says...

hmm...i thought the blood would recirculate when the arteries contract and move the blood along the veins. Oh well, i have no idea what really happens. It just seems like evolution would not make your penis necrotic if you're having a good time (or lack there of) ...hehe...

The shape of the sickle cell is probably what stagnants the blood in SCA?

ANYWAY... since canucks are out....GOOOOOOO Flames, Oilers annnnnnnnnd SENATORS!

I predict Senators vs. Flames for the finals (since we do need atleast one "underdog" in the finals or it wouldn't be the playoffs). One team with the offence; one team with the goalie...that would be one hell of a race.

Tim says...

Yeah it's true you have increased blood supply for like a little while...but when the blood in your penis runs out of oxygen, then really your screwed....at least, this is what I think. I know this happens in sickle cell anemia, but I really only extrapolated that to viagra. However, it is true that viagra overdose can lead to the death of your brother. I just figure it's due to a similar effect.

Karen says...

omg, i can't sleep. can it be, i'm finally experiencing insomnia??

yep, cindy, colours of the wind... how high...does the sicamore grow...if you cut it down, then you'll neeevverrrrrr knoooowwwwww... =P

PS: happy earth day.

- P&C: Dr. Sue Style -

this is great. study a little. read about sex and orgasms and necrophilia a little. study some more. and you'll learn things you never knew you never knew! (bonus points to anybody who can name that tune. =P)

and yes we should put it to rest...but since we're getting technical, that 2 minute time frame for guys, it does take longer to get there per repetition doesn't it? =P

in other news, did you guys see this on msn news? the UNSEXIEST MEN alive -- top 100 list *lol*. #1? *drumroll* gilbert gottfried. hahahaha. (you mean the voice is not sexy?! =P) other mentionables within the top 20 were osama bin laden and dr. phil. hahaha.

okay, back to physio. it's just too bad that it's always @ finals time that i realize that the stuff that we were learning are actually quite interesting and i probably should've paid attention during the term. bioc and phyl alike. hah, yes even enzymology is growing on me.

PS: congrats tim!! all done!!

PPS: also worth mentioning: HRM, queen elizabeth the 2nd, turned 80 today!!!

Pat says...

necrophilia and orgasms??..come on guys (pun intended) can't we just put this topic down to rest (pun intended)?

Gordon says...

K...i'm a little confused with this whole erection/viagra thing. So I understand that you get hypoxia if you are dead (since the entire body would be hypoxic) but if you take viagra, does your penis get necrotic because of hypoxia? This doesn't seem to make sense to me since the penis isn't stripped of blood supply (but actually has an increase of blood supply). I think the problem with viagra is tissue damage ... but whether its necrotic/hypoxic... i have no clue. Enlighten me.

Joanne: I think the term "all-night-long" just means you do it over and over again. The average time for a male to reach an orgasm is 2 minutes after penetration (despite what people keep saying about being able to "do it" for a LONG time because that's impossible unless the guy is just totally uninterested in who he's "doing it" with. In which case, I guess he can do it for hours.

If you were interested, the average time for a female to reach an organsm is 4 minutes (so i guess the guy just gotta give a little extra before penetration =P)

These are both VERY variable (actually from a real study), but to do it for hours is an anomoly.

NeverGonnaGrowUp says...

um. ya...so i probably can get my employee's discount in a bout 2 weeks, do i have any requests?

p.s. limited items pls unless u can pay me in advance since i dont have much money free (my europe trip booking and planning are eating up all the money)...

i also need to think what im gonna get myself since i have about 5 days between when i get the discount and when i announce my 2 week notice...LOL...

Joanne says...

Regarding sickle cell anemia (or now, more like a dead man's hard-on): OOOOOOHHHH...is that why it hurts for a guy to have a hard-on for a long time? So it's like a mechanism of the body's self-defense. That's frankly...kinda cool, hehe. I wonder if girls have something similar (what gets hard when a girl is turned on???)... That brings to mind though, so it's really not possible for a guy to do it "All night long" then, huh?

Thursday, April 20, 2006

Tim says...

Regarding sickle cell anemia:
Joanne, I just want you to know that if the guy died immediately...yeah MAYBE he would still have a hardon....but just for your information, the hardon doesn't last forever. In fact, probably within a day or two (probably less) the tissue would start to die due to hypoxia and so you'd have tissue necrosis of the penis. Which is why if you take excess viagra and you have a prolonged erection for more than 4 hrs, your supposed to go to the hospital. Apparently you get patients like that all the time...(with viagra overdose that is, not sickle cell anemia..)

Pat says...

I've something to contribute to that effect, but it may come off as offensive and depreciating to those of you who are sensitive to issues such as: online sex chats, comments made during online sex chats. There, you've been warned. Other than that, here's a link to what I find to be the funniest collection of pranks pulled in online sex chat forums! Bitter Asian Men. I like the "Asian Parent Syndrome" part the best.

Joanne says...

Ah that's true. Which makes me wonder, how DO people do it with dead people then? Or does that mean all necrophiliacs would have to be guys?

regarding sickle cell anemia AGAIN...if the guy did die and had rigor mortis, he wouldn't still be "hard" since it's not the muscle that keeps it erect.

...or the guy can just die. Well, in which case there'd be rigor mortis so he would still be "hard"...? But then again, what kinda girl would want a dead guy stuck in and up her?

regarding the kidney
I think the podocytes are cute!!!! And I know nothing about renal physiology. Heck, it was only 2 months ago when I realized that Diabetes causes kidney problems. Wait, that's renal pathology...whatever, same part of the body, hehe.

as much as i hate renal physiology, i must admit, the bowman's capsule and the loop of henle and the flanking tubules are kinda cool, the specificity of the different permeabilities, the structure (like an ornamented hair pin)...and they all pile up so nicely into this neat little bean-shaped box... yay nephrons!

okay, endocrinology 1 & 2. here we go.

physiology301 should be offered as distance-ed.

PS: joyce, do the podocytes actually have little feet?? =P haha.

Gordon says...

I hate HISTOLOGY too!! I'm just glad it's part of a bigger exam cause i usually get 50-60% on the histology sections...

Joyce says...

my goodness, people!!!

is it me or podocytes in our Bowman's capsule are really creapy looking?

*joyce trying to use GI physiology to fabricate a baffet stradegy for tomorrow*

Re: Tim's post

Hahahaha....sickle cell really does that to guys? And it's a pretty prominent problem in Africa from what I remember, too...that's probably why there are so many starving children there....they probably do it like rabbits...XD XD XD

Tim says...

While we're on the topic of sex. I learnt in hematology that sickle cell disease can cause clotting of the veins. How does this relate to sex? If the blood clot occurs in a certain anatomical part of the body...you tend to have a HIGHLY prolonged...EXTREMELY painful erection. Good for girls, bad for guys I suppose...(Some girl in my class said she wants to marry a guy that has sickle cell disease -_-'...)

Joyce: I hate histology too, my exam is on thursday :(

Yet another U.S. Phenomenon

It has come to my attention that the few American Born Taiwanese in my class speaks more fluent Taiwanese and English than Mandarin. Even more so, this cute Taiwanese/Japanese guy who's visiting our school for few months speaks only Japanese and Taiwanese with Jap accent.
While the kids of Ben, Cindy and my generation in Taiwan are more fluent in mandarin rather than taiwanese eventhough it is the language spoken by our parents/grandparent due to various edicational and political reason, kids of twnese origin in U.S. that were born or brought to here in early childhood grew up in an english (school) and taiwanese (home) environment.
I think it's pretty anologous to conservation of a specie from evolution in an isolated environment (like.. madagascar [sp?]). It's pretty cool to observe the cultural/value shift that's happening in Taiwan and at the same time witnessing some well-preserved ... uhm... twnese qualities (esp language wise..) in some other continent.
ahhhh, the sheer joy of hearing people my age speaking twnese (somehow w/ english accent.. 8p)

did i mention that i hate hate hate histology??

Gordon says...

No Joyce, I haven't started Repro yet. We do that next year =)

blah, back to reality in 2 days...

I was thinking of Ob/Gyn too. But it's funny. I think i'm thinking of family more and more each day. the variety is amazing and even though everyone thinks that family docs are DUMB... they probably have a larger knowledge base than specialists.

Try asking an ID doc if they can read an ECG...

NeverGonnaGrowUp says...

viv: chris DOES want to become an obstetrician/gynecologist...hahaha...

anyhow. i feel kinda stupid among u guys. u guys are doing all these courses and exams that fulfill your intellectual curiosity. what am i doing? well, today i found out i actually don't mind yellow gold, that i can survive with a 0.20carat diamond on my hand, there is a sexy way to wear pearls without looking dowdy, and i like watches with rectangular dials. LOL...
yay vanity!

Joyce says...

We all know Americans like to come up with conspiracy theories, and I just had my 1st real experience today. We had a forensic dentistry lecture today, and the prof's involved with the forensic team for 911 and various plane crashes.
Remember this plane crashed outside of Long Island a while back and was rumored to be shut down by a missile? Well, the prof's a supportor of the missile explanation. He said the a lot of mandibles retrieved had lateral fracture, which is consistent with strong lateral impact. If the fuel tank exploded, like the official investigation result, the force excerted would be more from bottom to top. Anyway, he was really suggesting about it. He was one of the few got to view the scenes and stuff and found some fuel tank pieces (w/ colour code and stuff.. i missed what exactly he was saying) previously found missing, and the FBI agents reassured him "what you are seeing is all we got, and there's no trace of missile explosive" without him even asking about the missile stuff. More so.. he showed us this supposed to be secret or classified tape about this aircraft trainer who witnessed a missile hitting the plane. He said that when the person was about to hold a press conference, some FBI came in and discredited the person, and the conference was never in the press. Funny thing was, when he was showing us the video, all the recording devices had to shut off in the class.
He kept on telling us evidence supporting the missile theory, and then add "i'm not suggesting, i'm just presenting the evidence." ... hahaha

anyway.. other than that, he showed us pictures and graphs telling us how they identify victims in different events. and this whole lecture feels like a series of graphic CSI scenes... for real... and disturbingly exciting (i dunno if it's exciting because it is disturbing or it's disturbing because it's exciting.. hmm)

chris and gordon: seems like physiology can get pretty exciting. we're still on endocrine.. bah..

AHHH... hate hate hate renal histology...

Karen says...

ben, your explanation was exactly the answer i was thinking too post-posting: at all costs, to bring the "sperms to the promise land"!! though, gordon's point and squirt...i'll remember that one! ;) *lol*.

Unknown says...

hmmm i just realized how bad this statement looks:
"...this is in the context of the good ol days when barbarians ran rampant and tied their wives up..."

Before you girls pounce on me, in my defence, I was referring to the good ol' days when biochem 403 exams did not exist and we can just run around beating elephants to death and eating their meat RAW ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG...

Unknown says...

Venturing a guess:

Fight or flight response serves to concentrate all the body's available resources on what's important at hand --> surviving potentially deadly situations like running away from a sabre tooth tiger

Thus, one can argue, sexual activity is probably 2nd in importance to survival. Survival of the species follows survival of the individual. Without reporduction... we'd have a very very short history of human kind.

Thus, it makes sense that the body drops all other activities to concentrate all its available resources on this important instant when passing on of your genes is at stake. A la --> a weak ejaculation or sub-par 'performance' probably lead to nature NOT selecting that individual (sperms don't make it to the promised land?). Of course, this is in the context of the good ol days when barbarians ran rampant and tied their wives up when they 'acquire' their wives (eventually leading to the tradition of wedding rings). Nowadays, viagra overpowers natural selection =).

Pat says...

karen.. if you do those kinds of posts.. I will never have anything to say on PC... and.. wow... don't get me wrong, this is definitely a topic of interest but... hahah.. who would have thunk..apparently, the logical sequence of thought from taiwan's independence is the neuronal mechanism of orgasms.... yeah...... and that's where I stop.

Gordon says...

OMG..is Karen talking about sex and orgasms without a trail of "EEEEEEEEEEEEWS" behind the topic?? hehe...

but just to help you out with PHYL 301:

the entire sexual activity relationship with the autonomic system is kinda reversed from the rest of the body. For example, it's counterintuitive for you to have the veins that drain the erectile tissue dilate RIGHT before you have sex (not very rest and digest to me...). Also, note that usually, it's the parasympathetic that increaes secretions in the body (not sympathetic, which causes ejaculation).

here's a nice mnemonic to remember for sexual activity:

Point and Squirt (Parasympathetic and Sympathetic)

Good Luck!

Karen says...

re: chris' post.

hmmm. is it me or is it anti-intuitive that having sex/having an orgasm leads to the flight-or-fight response?? i'm asking seriously in the scientific point of view! maybe it'll increase my understanding of human physiology and save me from my impending doom that is the phyl301 final. =P anybody??

[*pat inserts random sex-related punchline/wisecrack* *karen makes weak rebuttle*. there pat, i did it for you so don't go there. *glare*]

vivienne says...

Chris, only YOU can make sex sound clinical AND negative, at the same time! :p

I'm glad you're not studying to become a gynecologist, or else there'll be a huge drop in sexual activity within 300 km radius of where you'll be practising...

Christopher says...

Since you guys have all been studying hard, and we haven't had a comment about someone's sore derriere for a while:

During an orgasm, the entire sympathetic nervous system is activated leading to constriction of all the blood vessels. This leads to a transient spiking of the blood pressure up to 300 mm Hg. This increase in pressure can cause the rupture of cerebral arteries leading to stroke and brain damage.

Now that truly is a Mind-blowing Orgasm!

vivienne says...

Hehe...Karen made the Quote of the Week twice in a row. :D

And evidently Gordon's back. ;p

Gordon says...

Sleeping patterns are meant to be BROKEN during exam period!

And yeah... no complaints Pat... or we'll have to find a back up for dave's back up. haha. jk jk. But if you think about it...since we play longer and longer each time (2am, 4am..7am...10am..) soon enough, we'll play till 9pm...and ur sleep pattern will be normal after mj nite (/day). Sad enough, i actually dreamt about mj too... wonder if that's a sign to call gambler's anonymous.

haha...dave actually msged me yesterday...didn't seem too happy he wasn't included. But i reassured him Karen will be gone in may =P

OH OH...admins... new quote of the week (from the all-you-can-eat at Fish on Rice Saturday)...:

Gordon: Jersey Milk chocolate makes guys impotent.

Karen: OH NO!! BUT I LOVE JERSEY MILK!!

Karen says...

games night?! games night?! games would be whole night of cranium, big2, monopoly and etc. it was an MJ night!! respect the tiles and at least call it what it is! plus, who condemns all-night mj?!?! *shakes head* you're cut!! hehe, good times. plus, need i remind you that you'll never get another chance to do that during your undergrad, EVER. mmmmm can peter even access the blog.... China censors blogs right

On a similar note, China just yesterday (or today?) banned their local TV stations from using video footage from foreign sources for the stations' news casts. They are only allowed to use footage from the state run station.

And if you remember, Google China censors searches ==> try searching 天安门 (for those of you without chinese decoder - Tienanmen square - but it'll only work if you input chinese...) using google.cn

So much for freedom of expression and exchange of thoughts/ideas.

Also Pres. Hu also now urges for talks to resume with Taiwan to sustain peace. Which I guess is a good thing. But then he starts talking about a 1992 concensus in Taiwan about one china. Please.
Should we listen to a consensus taken over a decade ago? The will of the people are changing, and the heart of democracy is to let the people choose who they think will be best for them. If China managed their human rights issues better, maybe there'd be a lot more people who support One China.

Oh wait, China isn't even a democracy.

=P I'll stop ranting now. Sorry, I'm in a sour mood (403!! ahhhh!! PHYL!! ahhh)

i dont know who among you have started studying, so I don't want to bother with phoning... that's why I'm just posting it here and see if anyone know (am I breaking a P&C rule? cant remember)

Natalie's 1st pacakge, page 114, where she describes leaving groups and catalysis, in the txt, it says the explusion of alcohols can be aided by general ACID catalysis.

But the diagram shown is a general BASE catalysis....

WTF!?

Is she saying a general acid can protonate the carbonyl oxygen? so that the activated water has an easier time attacking the carbonyl carbon?

anyone?

Joanne says...

Everytime I go shopping on Bloor St (dammit, why must it only be 15 minutes away!) I feel tempted to make some sort of social commentary. On the agenda today: Toys and Social Conditioning

The mission: Find a present for my cousins' 6th and 3rd birthdays (their birthdays are very close together).

Barbies? Nah, there's already enough dissertation on how the doll promotes poor body image.

Those weird big-headed dolls (you guys know what I'm talking about?)? Nah, it just teaches them that they have to wear slutty clothes and be absurdly up-to-date with the trends to be considered cool.

Disney? Nah, I don't want them to start buying into the whole branding business...although judging from their existing collection, I suspect it's already too late...

Easy Bake Oven? Nah, I already do Type II Diabetes research in a pediatric medical institution (which is kinda depressing...), the last thing I need is to promote juvenile onset diabetes anymore...although it would make it easier for me to apply for grants...but I don't want my family members to be part of it, haha.

Baby dolls? Nah, I fear them developing a premature maternal instinct, thus promoting teen pregnancy. Besides, isn't it freaky that a 3-year-old wants to be called "Mommy"?

So I ended up getting a My Little Pony Rainbow Fountain playset or something (alright, multicoloured flying ponies would probably encourage the use of hallucinogenic drugs, but dammit, these ponies are so cool!) and Lego (develops creativity and spatial thinking skills...can never go wrong with that). And I wonder...if my parents' nondiscretion with my childhood play things could explain my present day neuroses...

Ah I'm just bored.

Another thing: shopping the shoe section of Holt Renfrew = surefire way to get depressed.

--- NEWS FLASH ALL ---

This has just come in . . . Karen To, of the UBC Biochem Brother/Sisterhood (see article below), does indeed have a hidden personality. Whilst delivering BPP presents to the Biochem profs at the Life Sciences Building, it was discovered by Vivienne Lam and Benjamin Lai on Friday, April 7, 2006 at 1:25 PM that Ms. To has indeed a "softer side." In fact, witnesses Lam and Lai testify to hearing Ms. To thanking a Professor Strynadka in a "overly sweet, sugary voice" that no one in P&C group has EVER heard before. Confronted by the witnesses, even Ms. To admits to "wanting to puke" herself when remembering the tone of voice she used to carry the conversation with the forementioned Prof. Strynadka.

"The softer side of Sears...I mean, Karen."

--- ---

HAHAHA....seriously, Ben and I were like O.O at hearing Karen speak in such perky, sugary tones. If you had been there, you would've been like...WHAT ARE YOU DOING SOLDIER!!! It would've scared all of you!

Ah...last day of school! Let the studying begin!

Karen: I dunno if it's good or not, but my uncle bought us tickets when they come to Edmonton in september. I'm assuming it's all right?

I don't know why, but Michelle Pfeiffer doesn't really cut it for me at all. It's not that she's ugly, there's just something about her..

the girl from hitch...looks old for some reason. I don't think she made a good match for the role.

As for the black leather suit....HALLE BARRY hands down!!!

Joyce says...

can nicole kidman be under the milf category? i dun really have the impression of her being mom-ish, especially the post-cruise nicole kidman.
hmm... other milf (somehow i find this term really ... wrong... and perversely oedipal...)..
hmm, oh, the rich heiress in Hitch (the movie). I forgot her real name, but surely a nice work of god. 8p
bah.. why am i so actively participating in this discussion?? ahh.. tis the stress.

back to entertainment tonight: P&C style...

re: the milf question. hmmm... i like teri hatcher from her superman days. =) oh! nicole kidman and dianne lane (a la unfaithful)!!

Stephen says...

Yes, you do see Sharon Stone's vagina in Basic Instinct. In fact, that's all anybody remembers about the movie. So much so, that the poster for Basic Instinct 2 (in theatres now, god only knows why they made a sequel) is Sharon Stone in a chair in a shrinks office with her legs crossed.

Apart from Catherine Zeta Jones I would have to say Michelle Pfeiffer. Apart from the 60's batman show, she's the best thing in leather on-screen!

Joanne says...

Vivienne (hehe, I'll forever feel like I need to prove I know how to spell your name): Payam (yup, that's how you spell it) still remembers to ask about me? Awwww...sweetie pie! I actually didn't know he existed back in Burnaby South...hehe. I met him when I was taking BIOL 112 in July 2002 (I was in the same class as Gary and evidently, Karen!). His dad's super smart - he's got a Ph.D. in...something...from Oxford and was a sessional lecturer at UBC. I believe he was trying to get into Pharmacy...how is he anyway? Do you talk to him much?

I have not actually seen Basic Instinct, but I heard you see Sharon Stone's vagina when she crosses her legs. Seeing how I can't even bare to look at my vagina (and after watching Sex and the City, I refuse to take Samantha's advice and take a compact down there), I doubt I want to see one on a witch... *shudder*

Jennifer Garner (as a MILF figure)!!! But she's almost too...bubbly. A MILF needs some sorta aura of...seductive maturity...

Joyce: Heheh....knowing the type of guy that you like...is this guy also lanky? Hehehe....you have a penchant for the geeky or nerdy guy...^^;;; Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I'm willing to bet that the new taiwanese guy is probably JUST LIKE the guy that you liked back in Taiwan....

...and about Sharon Stone being a witch, hahahha...I totally agree. Actually, I would love to see ALL forementioned stars without their makeup.

Joanne: Hey, do you know this Indian guy called Piyam (spelling?) back from your high school? I met him over summer and saw him today in Scarfe, and he asked about you. It's kinda weird 'cause I had no idea you guys knew each other. ~.~ IB kids, eh?

Karen: I agree with you! I think Jessica Alba's hot! :D :D :D

Joyce says...

Totally agree on Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta Jones. I think everyone know my ex-007 (and the best one ever) obssession, and I downloaded the SNL episode of Catherine zeta jones and watched it over and over again.
hmmm... also.. Colin Firth and Liam Neeson, especially the latter.. yuuum, I went to see Kingdom of Heaven just for him, yet who knows he dies within the first 10 min. BAH!

btw, Sharon Stone is .. old and a psycho. She was not ashamed to tell the press that she walked up to a teenager, who was having issue with belly-baring shirt with her mom at the time, and tell her if she's pressured to have sex (or ... sex from the other entrance), just offer the guy oral sex, since it is "safer" that way. man that was wrong. And i'll bet your tuition $ that she'd look like an old witch without all the make up.

and.. joanne, to answer ur question. definitely catherine zeta jones or kate hudson. once rachel weiss gives birth, she'd be on that list too. i find S.J. Parker and Gweneth Paltral a little bit too pretencious and looks a bit high maintenance. hmm... oh.. and Anjolina Jolie...

should i start to doubt my sexuality?... hehe.. no
cuz... there's this visiting student for advance standing, meaning he has a d.d.s. degree somewhere in the world. I overheard him and this taiwanese instructor speaking taiwanese beside me (it was my first time hearing that prof speaking taiwanese too). However, just seconds ago i heard him speaking japanese w/ my classmate. turns out, his parents are taiwanese but he grew up in japan. Now he's considering comming to my school. oh, and did i mentioned that he's CUUUUUUUTE and tall.... *joyce is currently in wonderland*

Joanne says...

Mmmm, yah, I know boys who cried while watching V for Vendetta...and that was because they were shaving off Natalie Portman's hair...

Catherine Zeta Jones...that reminds me of a conversation I had the other day with...I forgot who... Who is your favourite MILF-like figure? Especially with like, Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct 2 coming up and such...

Speaking of old guys, I found a new old guy crush! It's Dr. Salter. He's like 90-years-old (a bit more mature than Dr. Mack Daddy but whatever hehe), his office is right beside the Grad Room, he's an orthopedic surgeon (or used to be..I wouldn't trust this guy doing surgery anymore), made a huge development in mobile traction or something, was awarded this HUGE ASS CIHR operating grant, wears a lab coat even though he doesn't do experiments anymore, smiles and asks how you're doing whenever he sees you in the hallway, and makes tea in the lunch room. And no *ahem* I'm not stalking him...

Stephen says...

Two things:

1) "Jewelry" is, in itself, plural. Hence "jewelrys" or, correcting for spelling, "jewelries" actually would refer to a place that sells jewels.

2) You are all forgetting about one VERY important thing. People age. You need to account for the fact that these people will probably not be hot anymore as they age. Thus, I give you two other celebrities to consider:

Sean Connery - is, was, and always will be the coolest and sexiest man alive
Catherine Zeta Jones - only one word need be used: UNBELIEVABLE!

I also refuse to consider any part of Bush's lineage attractive. Regardless of how they may feel about him. Like Larry David, I too am too repulsed by republicans to consider them shaggable.

i read an article in .. either vogue or vainity fair that... portman, being a vegetarian, makes sure the clothes and shoes, etc she wears has no animal product like... leather, and the jewellrys she wears to the events does not cause any hard labour or blood from African miners with unfair treatment, etc. that seems a little bit extream for me ....

howcome the discussion of hot girls is more participated by the members of this blog...

Yeah... no...Reese is definitely not the hottest..but she's definitley cute as hell and sweet as hell. How can you go wrong with that combo!

Natalie portman definitley up there too... except she was a turn off in V for Vendetta since she's bald =P

Joanne says...

Oh Gisele...

What about...Natalie Portman?

Unknown says...

Hmmm yeah, as soon as we start talking about hot people, bloglets start posting again... interesting...

anyway, Reese... if we look at the whole package, including personality and brains, would be very high... just looks.... I'd only give 8/10

Gordon says...

gosh, i don't think i have ever posted so frequently but anyway...almost forgot REESE... definitely #1 on my list...

Karen says...

true that. hehehe. they are all actors. which tells you that karen has had way too much time on her hands this term and is a regular TV watcher again!!! nooooo. *sigh* AND i'm hooked onto america's next top model again. what an awesome show. muahahaha. =P

ohhh. gisele!!! yes, she has to make it onto the list also. did anybody else see her in the victoria's secret fashion show a couple months back?? i remember her looking so good, it was unhuman. awww, nobody else likes jessica alba, a la fantastic four?? she's so pretty AND hot. that's a rare combination!

in other news, i finally watched crash yesterday. and it was OKAY la. i find it tried too hard to jerk at your heartstrings, successful as it may be. i spent the entire movie with irregular heart rhythms or like on the verge of tears. eugh, much more heavy duty than i had thought. and definitely not a good choice for a 'relaxing' movie after working on your thesis the entire day. if anything, the movie just increased my blood pressure. AND, of note, ryan phillipe does not seem to age from movie to movie since like the teeny bopper days. he looked better than he acted in that movie. hehehe. BUT, all in all, def. worth seeing. though i don't know if it deserves a 'best picture' award.

PS: how about...red and white??? for patriotism! (still trying to move from this green...=P)

Gordon says...

They are alllllllllll actors.

Joanne says...

Speaking of Sophia Bush, I think I saw her in a very early role in National Lampoon's Van Wilder.

Am I the only one who thinks Jessica Alba has gotten too skinny??? I don't remember her ever looking the way she did at the Academy Awards.

Btw, that picture of Scarlett Johansson on the side is HOT. Eddie and I spent three minutes just staring at it with our mouths wide open. Good bonding activity, hehe.

I only know Collin Farrell as well. I don't even think I spelled his name right. I'm going to hope that these guys belong to rock bands of sorts so I don't feel like I'm totally under a rock...?

What about supermodels? Have you SEEN Gisele Bundchen on the cover of a Victoria's Secret catalogue??? My goodness, it almost made me believe in God!

Gordon says...

Don't forget Sophia Bush!

Joyce says...

on ben's list, i agree with .. hm.. let's see
Johansson
McAdam
Knightly

Backinsale is too old, and Jessica Alba's just annoying.
Yes, she is hot, but she is the kind of hot girl that
1) only look average without make up
2) knows she's hot and try to maximize the hot/prettiness the way she presents herself, hence rendering herself annoying and pretencious.
(see, the ones i agree with are more like... undertoned but confident beauties.)

am i too old now being 22 or been in academic slavery for too long that I only know Colin Ferrel on the pictures Karen posted.

*stare and drool* scarlett johansson....... and NO, i'm NOT a lesbian

Unknown says...

bioc should be in fac. of med.

Ok just to give everyone a taste, the forerunners I'm thinking of right now are:

Johenssen
Beckinsale
McAdams
Alba
Knightley...

Again, im still in lab, so I won't be googling their pics from here..

Karen says...

does anyone know if the ubc department of biochemistry is in faculty of medicine or faculty of science?

PS: ben, you should get jessica alba's picture in your webvote... now SHE's hot!

vivienne says...

Yeah, but David Hasselhoff in a SPEEDO?!!? >.<; Ben, I really do wonder about you sometimes . . .

Unknown says...

Come on Pat, you know you want a piece of David Hasselhoff!

And due to popular demand, I'll put one up for the guys...

but not right now... cuz Im at the lab.... and I don't want to get in trouble...

Gordon says...

what I'm MORE concerned about is why ben had a webvote for the girls and not the guys...

Pat says...

what im concerned about.. is why Ben has a picture of david hasselhoff on his desktop.... interesting..
